Young People and Drugs

It is the Government's vision to significantly reduce the number of young people affected by substance misuse thus improving outcomes for young people, their families and the community.

Drugs education is predominantly provided by the teaching staff, however external contributors have a valuable role to play in supporting schools and working alongside teachers.

Druglink has a wealth of experience having been involved in working within the field of drugs and alcohol since 1984.  We currently provide very successful drug and alcohol awareness programmes to both primary and secondary schools in Dacorum. We also provide a wide range of support services for those affected by drugs and or alcohol, their families and work closely with local agencies and the community.

Education

Providing a good drug and alcohol awareness education programme for pupils is a Government requirement. It is vital that those who provide the programme are knowledgeable of the subject, and/or have access to agencies who work continually in the drug and alcohol field.

Since 1984 Druglink have been working with those affected directly by drugs & alcohol or indirectly by supporting their family and friends, we already work closely with many schools within Dacorum running very successful awareness training programmes.

Listed below are the training programmes provided within the Druglink School Services and outlines what those attending the sessions will gain at the end:

Drug & Alcohol Awareness Training for Staff

Outcomes:

• Teaching staff have appropriate skills & knowledge to address drug and alcohol issues
• Schools have workable drug & alcohol policy & procedures
• Schools have well planned drug & alcohol education programmes which take into account a school's requirements and the needs of pupils

Drug & Alcohol Awareness Training for Pupils

Outcomes:

• Increased awareness, understanding of drugs & alcohol and their impact. Helping young people develop skills and attitudes so that they can make informed choices
• Knowledge of where to access help and advice
• Build confidence to enable them to speak with an appropriate adult on any issues of concern
• Avoidance of the under-rated dangers of drug driving

Drug & Alcohol Awareness Training for Parents

Outcomes:

• Enabling parents to recognise early signs of substance misuse
• Increased awareness and understanding of drugs & alcohol and their impact.
• Knowledge of where to access help and advice
• Understanding of the best methods of having discussions on substance misuse with their children and avoiding the conflict that can alienate them

Peer-Mentoring

We have found that training pupils to help each other in the form of peer-mentoring is a succesful route to raising awareness and discouraging substance misuse anongst their fellow pupils
